Questions Students Ask Why enroll in JROTC? What you take away from JROTC will not be found in any textbook. It will not be studied by any other students or in any other school. It has not been taught before. It will not be taught again, because the subject of JROTC is YOU! JROTC is all about you. It is devoted to your growth, both as a student and as a person. JROTC helps develop the self-confidence, self-discipline and focus students need to meet the challenges they face as they progress through school and enter the adult world. JROTC promotes civic responsibility and helps develop strong and informed leaders---individuals that can excel in the 21st century. What type of credit is offered for JROTC? JROTC is offered under the Career, Technical and Agricultural Education umbrella as an elective. All students may enroll in JROTC for one to four years of study. Do I have to wear a uniform? A uniform is usually worn one day a week and during participation in special ceremonies. Does the school provide the uniform or will I have to pay for it? The JROTC program supplies the uniform, books, and any equipment the course requires. Do I have to get a short haircut? Short haircut, No, but it is true that JROTC cadets must meet grooming standards as set forth by each branch of the military. What types of extracurricular activities are offered? Each JROTC program is unique. Many programs have Color Guard and Drill Teams. In addition, you will find programs that offer Air Rifle Teams, a Georgia High School Association varsity athletic sport. Some schools also include Academic Teams and Raider Challenge Teams that build rope bridges, compete with land navigation teams, and work on improving physical fitness. Are there any summer programs? Selected students will be offered the opportunity to attend summer leadership programs designed to improve and enhance their team building and leadership skills. Honor camps may also be available on a competitive basis along with drill camps. Will I have to enlist in the military or the reserves after high school? No, you are under no obligation for any future military service. JROTC is not a recruiting program for the active duty military. Our mission is to build better citizens.
